Mighty is Love
A few weeks ago I received a package in the mail from Professor Thomas Ord, a Christian theologian who teaches at Northwest Nazarene University in Idaho. He mailed me two of his latest books because he read an article of mine and he thought they would help us launch a conversation. The two books offer an extended argument that the central virtue of Christianity ought to be love - not faith, not salvation, but love. Reading his insightful books (Defining Love and The Nature of Love: A Theology) it occurred to me that the subject is one that has a natural home in Judaism, and calls for a Jewish reclamation. I want to make an argument for why love is important as a Jew; what it is that Jewish love looks like, and how we might resolve to attempt a more persistent and resilient love to heal this broken world and to bring wholeness to shattered hearts.

We're still waiting for the Republican line to be decided but the counting of the absentee ballots has begun and we should know the results no later than Thursday. Currently, my opponent and I are only separated by about a dozen votes but we continue to be optimistic as we targeted absentee voters at the time the ballots were sent out.

White Plains, NY, September 19, 2010 -- County Executive Astorino is breaking the law. The County Board only took legal action after close to seven months of discussion. The County Board was forced to retain outside counsel because the County Attorney, who was appointed by Mr. Astorino, refused to enforce the law. The County Attorney’s own legal opinion concludes that Mr. Astorino is violating the law, but he refused to enforce the law against his boss. In a separate lawsuit brought on behalf of parents, Judge Collabella, issued a temporary restraining order reversing the Administration's illegal actions.

Scarsdale, NY, September 19, 2010 -- Governor Paterson has signed a bill that will require motorists to keep their distance from bicyclists while driving. The new law is being hailed as an important step in decreasing the number of bike riding deaths in New York.
"Nearly 25% of all highway fatalities in New York State are people walking and bicycling, and New York's bicycle and pedestrian death rate is almost twice the national average," said Jennifer Clunie, executive director of the New York Bicycling Coalition.

Probably not. This week’s announcement from the National Bureau of Economic Research confirmed what we already knew, which is that the Great Recession has been over for quite a while – officially, now, since June 2009. The downturn that began in November 2007 therefore lasted 18 months, making it the longest U.S. economic contraction since World War II.
