Subpoenas, Consolidation, Shopping, the Great Depression, Love, and the Memo BY I.M. Cob
White Plains, NY, August 18, 2010 -- Earlier this week, this investigative reporter, I.M. Cob, penned a column entitled “I Will Be King; If I Can Stop Flip-Flopping on the Issues BY I.M. Cob", which highlighted the political aspirations of County Board of Legislators Chairman Ken Jenkins. It appears that while this column was being prepared, Mr Jenkins was busy preparing his own documents. The documents were subpoenas apparently delivered by Mr Jenkins respectively to Westchester County ExecutiveRob Astorino, Commissioner of Public Safety George Longworth, Deputy Commissioner of Public Safety Joe Yasinski, and Anthony Sutton of Fire and Emergency Services.
Yonkers Tribune / Westchester Herald acid-tongued bloggers have confirmed Mr Astorino’s assertion that Ken Jenkins had been informed that the three commissioners to whom subpoenas were attempted to be delivered were away on vacation and that the matter would be addressed upon their return. But Mr Jenkins had the subpoenas drafted and evidently delivered to the 9th floor anyway.
What does this action prove? It proves Mr Jenkins may be too myopic to comprehend that people do go on vacation; it further proves Mr Jenkins may not have a grasp of the English language (unless the bilingual Mr Astorino explains it to him in Spanish. Logical inference suggests Mr Jenkins is beginning to feel a bit shut out of the County Executive Office.
In an effort to help explain this to Mr Jenkins, this column will attempt to distill the facts on the simplest level. It is really very simple. Mr Astorino is County Executive; Mr Jenkins not. Mr Astorino was elected to the Office ofWestchester County Executive by The People of Westchester County. The People spoke, they wanted a change and more than that, they wanted relief from taxes. Mr. Astorino spoke repeatedly about consolidating departments during his campaign. . Mr Astorino further candidly shared the rationale that consolidation would not be pretty and it would not be easy. His reasoning equates to recognizing meaning job cuts will result and the juggling of commissioners will demand shared responsibilities and services. We all knew that was coming. it seems unfathomable Mr Jenkins would have a beef with that. One does have to wonder what about this merger exactly has Mr Jenkins panties in a wad? If Mr Jenkins’ perspective, was revealed, perhaps there would be no contention, but...
As of this juncture, Mr Jenkins comes off sophomoric and uninformed. What better place to begin the consolidation process than by merging police and emergency services.
Had Mr Jenkins taken a trip to 60 Control and the Fire Training Center, he would be overwhelmed by the evident and blatant waste of money. It seems every time former Westchester County Executive Andy Spano uttered the words “terrorist attack” or “Al Qaeda”, a new piece of fire and/or police equipment was delivered. There is so much equipment up there the county had to build a new fire bay to store it all .Take a ride two minutes north on 9A and the County Police have much of the same equipment. The two locations are the very definition of “duplication of services” and are specifically what CE Astorino promised to reduce.
The Office of Women; Westchester Tourism; Gay, Lesbian and Transgender Issues; Human Rights; and the Taxi and Limousine Commission should be consolidated Three of those delineated have New York State counterparts and one does nothing at all. If there was ever a propitious time to cut, now is that time. Why have you been averse to suggest cuts to social services? There is a lot of “feel good” fluff and money there. While we are cutting, let us continue to cut down on those who drive those cute little Westchester County Prius’s that we see while shopping in White Plains. Hey Ken… I see them when you are shopping there, too. And I might add, while on my dime.
Many acid-tongued bloggers suggest Mr Jenkins has remained aloof from contending with “any real issues" during this “Great Recession”. When will you share the pain suffered by your constituents Mr Jenkins? Is it easier to forget about us and easier to pander to like minded “poverty pimps”?
It would be too simple to surmise that this reporter loves Rob Astorino best. That would be the furthest notion from the truth. Like a good parent, I love you both the same. I have been critical of his administration and am now so of yours. Rob Astorino and his 9th floor motley crew got elected because they offered the voters “hope”. What Mr Jenkins, have you to offer? After dancing about sparring in the political ring for almost eight months, is it not time to take off the gloves, stop prancing, and reveal credible financial cost cutting measures?. Until then, Mr Jenkins, Westchester County will be holding you accountable for every word and action you take.
Psst. acid-tongued bloggers have already delivered a similar memo to Mr Astorino. Perhaps now, you will both be on the same page. Keep hope alive.
