Mount Vernon, NY, September 2, 2010 -- Mayor Clinton I. Young, Jr. announced today that the National Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Southern Westchester, including the City of Mount Vernon. Hurricane Earl is moving north-northeast and will impact local weather on beginning Friday, September 3, 2010. Mayor Young advises residents to be prepared for any weather-related emergency that might occur during the current hurricane season.
What You Should Know:
1. To report an emergency, please call the Mount Vernon Police Department at (914) 665-2500 or 911. To report electrical or gas emergencies, call Con Edison at 1-800-752-6633
2. Sanitation Pick up is on the HOLIDAY SCHEDULE (see full sanitation schedule on www.cmvny.com)
3. Secure loose outdoor objects, which can be blown around by high winds.
4. Make a emergency kit - specifically, a go-bag for use in an evacuation and a household disaster kit to enable a family to survive at home for several days without electricity
5. Have a plan - a family emergency plan should including deciding where to go in the event you have to leave your home
6. Check on elderly and disabled residents/relatives
7. Stay informed - keep up-to-date on the progress of any storm and the protective actions being recommended by government agencies in response.
The City of Mount Vernon will continue monitor weather updates. Emergency crews are in a state of readiness and alert. The American Red Cross is on standby if evacuations are necessary.
Hurricane season started June 1 and extends through Nov. 30. After a mild hurricane season in 2009, the National Hurricane Center is projecting increased hurricane activity this year. For more information, log on tothe National Weather Service website at www.nws.noaa.gov.
