There was little surprise in Alan Hevesi's confession that he was a corrupt Comptroller. News of the Attorney General's investigation had leaked over the years, and the guilty pleas of his co-conspirators made it clear that his office was a cesspool of favoritism obtained through bribery.

Assemblyman George Latimer (D-Westchester, 91st A.D.) spoke today about a series of legislative proposals, already introduced in the Assembly, that would improve Albany’s ethics immediately, proposed laws which he is co-sponsoring. “There are a number of us in the Assembly who are deeply committed to reform of our ethics – but at present, we lack support from enough other members to pass these bills,” Latimer noted.

Kenneth Kratz, the district attorney for Calumet County, Wisconsin, sent repeated texts to a young woman whose boyfriend he was prosecuting for allegedly trying to choke her to death. The texts included propositions and inappropriate comments such as “Have u ever been spoiled by someone? I mean like being taken care of and spoil him with attention in return? Without ever saying no?” The woman, 26-year-old Stephanie Van Groll, eventually complained to the police. The justice system is supposed to protect crime victims. Occasionally, however, prosecutors’ power leads them astray.

New York, NY, October 3, 2010 -- "An investigative report released today reveals that Carl Paladinohas pocketed $3 million in taxbreaks by promising to jump start economic revival in the Buffaloarea, but in reality he has only created a handful of jobs. Moreover, according to the report, while he claims to have made investments through his holdings, Paladino has often just sold himself vacant lots he already owned. To this day, these lots remain undeveloped. This report makes it clear that Paladino has abused State programs to gain millions in government tax breaks while not delivering any of the jobs or real economic development he promised.

This is the third quarterly report of 2010, describing major initiatives underway. Though much of the quarter overlaps what should be a quiet summer, there’s much going on. The quarter’s highlights were several events organized by volunteers and done with the substantial support of the Village: the Volunteer Fireman’s Parade this last Saturday, the “Take Me To The River” concert in early September, and a magic-themed Friday Night Live in July. All were blow-out events with hundreds of participants and great fun.

The anger is palpable. The simmering pot of discontent has been incessant for decades. The political pitch is now boiling over. Dismay has wrought anger. Is anger the elixir for the issues confronting our society?
It took us long enough to move beyond dismay. The political strategists’ maneuvers coaxed, cajoled , and threatened to keep their masters and us in line by the gift of eloquent, and might I add even loquacious abandon. The game was afoot. Few got it. Even today, many are in disbelief. With each revelation we have become angrier. Our disgust ratcheted higher elevating our diminishing capacity to lucidly reach resolution to the ills that plague us. There are many concerns. Few have been dealt with reasonably, fairly, equitably, or competently.

But, for around 150 people, Grise Fiord is home. The town of Grise Fiord on Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, Canada, has temperatures below freezing nearly all year. Its Inuit name, Aujuittuq, means “place that never thaws.”
The families that settled Grise Fiord never chose to live in that arctic desert. They were stuck at the top of the world to serve as human flags.

Last Friday, I sat in the Boise, Idaho, airport, watching people stream in from across the country dressed in Boise State Broncos gear. College football season is in full swing, and even the airlines are profiting.
But for former college football star Reggie Bush, it has already been a rough season. He may be the only American male who had a worse September than Barack Obama.
